There are three ways to analyze gender in this class
- Resource
- Presumptions
- Opportunities
What is toxic masculinity ?
Is there really a War on Men?
In this video it brought up how there is a War On Men, it didn’t necessarily say that women are the oppressors, but to me this is in contrast to Feminism Movements.
What is the difference between gender and sex?
How I understood these
concepts is pretty simple:
Sex: is the
biological make up of a human – this is easy for me to remember because when
humans have sex (intercourse) they use their private organs with the other sex.
Gender: is the characteristics that a society or culture views as masculine or
feminine. Also Gender is what that person identifies him/herself with.
Distinguishing these two makes a lot more sense to
me – When the speakers from the blog talked about how chromosomes and DNA are
not just male (XY) and female (XX), I had a realization because from a
psychology class that I took I heard about the other possible DNA characteristics
that would make up a personality.
But my
question is if we do add another gender do we have to treat them a different
way?
I understand that they are humans and they could be
treated however they want to be treated, but the transgendered people that I
know they either are masculine or they are feminine. This makes me think that
all humans are either masculine and feminine . . .
Why is anorexia on the rise among men?
I thought this was a very important topic that was
discussed, because I have personally seen soldiers in the military force themselves not to eat because they are being pressured and threatened that
their going to get kicked out of the Army because they were too fat.
In this blog it was mentioned that most men that
would get anorexia were the ones that played weight regulated sports.
Instantly, I thought about how the United States Army plays a critical role on
the pressuring of soldiers to meet a standard weight and physical appearance. I
wish the blog talked about this more because it is over looked or its just not possible
because “these are soldiers”.
FACTS
- Women are diagnosed with anorexia more than men are
- Homosexual and bisexual men were also the ones diagnosed with anorexia
- Small minority of anorexia suffers are men
- Women are more willingly to seek treatment than men
I thought this was interesting when they said that
this was the most deadly mental disorder. It was discriminating when
they said that the women treatment facility centers usually do NOT admit males
because – most of the anorexia suffers have trauma from men and the women can
be triggered by them. I understand that but it still is not fair for Males that suffer.
Males
They are neglected from possible treatments to get
better
Men can have trauma from women just as well as
women having trauma from them
Females
These facilities are great but do they value women more than men?
This isolates women from men, but there are going
to be men everywhere on this planet and sometimes men do look similar to each
other.
I think if the trauma is that serious they need
more exposure to what is the trauma – I do understand that everything takes
time!
With that being said when we watched the movie
“Miss Representation” they talked about oppressed males committing suicide and
the rate of suicide is a lot higher than women.
I think this goes under diagnosed within men and
then suicide meets them before it can be diagnosed.
Misrepresentation
The first movie that we watched seems to be
pro-feminism and from my interpretation it seemed like it they put male’s down
and discredited the importance of the male species.
Media - is the message and the messenger and they are consistently shaping the society however they want us to see it . . .
I get that there is a wage war between male and female; and women want to make the same as men. but we do not hear about these women wanting to do the "shit" jobs (garbage man, coal mining, and etc.)
- a list of "shit" jobs here . .
Some women want to be career women AND THAT IS great for them!
There are other jobs out there than being a CEO, working in an office, bossing people around and making a lot of money. It seems like some women that fight for equal opportunity want the best jobs but not the "shit" jobs that are filled with 99% of men.
yes there are women that do the "shit" jobs but from that article it says that even when a female coal worker is on the line she isn't digging the coals but only operating machines and doing administration things . . .
The mask you live in
This is a very touching movie to me because I
understood a lot of what was being said and I felt empathy for the oppressed
group that was interviewed because I understand . . .
Oppression
leads to depression and then aggression
Boys and men get downplayed when it comes to
emotional problems such as:
- · Anorexia
- · Mental disorders
- · They have to be tougher than they really are
- · They are taught to disrespect women (from what they see)
I caught a great theory from this movie about self
awareness . .
Dealing with these men in present time
self-awareness can be how they handle a mental illness on their own - but when
people see that someone has a mental illness they easily push them away because
they are afraid. But really they are aware of how they the psychologically
(sometimes).
I like tell how the film talked about how the
oppressed groups:
- · Troubled Teens
- · Prisoners
- · Boys to Men
- · Music Videos
- · Mean things boys hear from other men (FATHERS & COACHES)
The mission when dealing with the oppressed is to
get out of their heads and into their hearts! Return them to what they know the
positive human qualities, and they want them to stay true to themselves and not
to wear a mask.
These are all great points that need to be
addressed and this movie was really great because it didn't address a war of
male versus female. Although it talked about some of the negative qualities
that men have and continue to pass down, they was more of a call to action and
that you need to lead by example.
This brought up a question to myself because on a
metaphysical perspective - we are all humans and we feel some of the similar
dangerous different situations, but oppression is oppression no matter what sex
or gender you are. We all experience these pressures as a human because this is
the human experience it's about feeling . . .
We need to have a call to action and to consider
more metaphysical approaches to dealing with these gender and sex wars. This
leads me to the next topic!
This last weekend (12JUNE2016) there
was a mass shooting targeting the LGBTQ community at a nightclub in Florida.
There are reports that this was a hate crime and now toxic masculinity is being
recognized in the media (we will see how long for).
There were witness
reports in this article from his ex-wife that says that he was a hateful person
and used racial and homophobic language.
A belief is a reason for
action
If men constantly have
these close minded beliefs that the hyper masculine men are more “manly” than
Homosexuals and gays – then this will give men the purpose to do these hate
crimes – to show domination and destroying these communities.
Maybe not a War on Men but definitely a war on masculinity . . .
